MONROVIA April 17 (LINA) – The Criminal Court A has released additional 19 prisoners after the prosecution failed to indict them within the statutory timeframe.
This brings to 35 the total number of inmates who have been released by the court in recent times. It was recently established that a total of 111 inmates were being held beyond the statutory detention period without being indicated.
The charges against these inmates varied from serious crimes like murder and armed robbery to lesser offenses such as arson and conspiracy.
The motion for the release of these inmates was filed by public defender Cllr. Sennay Carlor II and supported by Cllr. Aloysius Toe, citing constitutional and legal provisions that demand the timely indictment of detainees.
Judge Roosevelt Willie of Criminal Court ‘A’ has granted the release of these inmates, with a plan to release them gradually rather than all at once.
Initially, there were 111 inmates on the list, with 35 being released, the remaining 76 are expected to be set free in the coming days.
This development underscores the importance of upholding the rights of detainees to a fair and timely judicial process as required by the constitution and other notable laws.
